Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
What is CBT-I?
CBT-I is the gold standard treatment for insomnia. It is a highly effective behavioral treatment, with 70-80% of patients seeing significant improvement in their sleep quality and efficiency. It is the first line treatment for insomnia, recommended above sleep medications.
CBT-I works by targeting behaviors and thoughts that keep people stuck in the often vicious cycle of insomnia.
It is brief, with most patients completing treatment within 4 to 6 weekly or bi-weekly sessions.

Who is CBT-I for?
Insomnia is defined as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep and/or waking up too early at least 3 times per week for 3 months. Individuals with insomnia are distressed by their sleep difficulties and/or experience difficulties in their daytime functioning as a result of sleep problems. Insomnia may occur on it's own or in conjunction with other conditions like anxiety, depression, chronic pain or depression. If you experience seizures or suffer from bipolar disorder, CBT-I must be modified appropriately to fit your unique needs and challenges with sleep.
Maybe you have been trying to fix your sleep for years. You've read books and listened to podcasts. Maybe you've taken a variety of sleep medications with varying side effects and effectiveness. Perhaps you have a narrative about yourself that you just will never be a 'good sleeper.' If any of these things resonate, you would very likely benefit from trying CBT-I to help you get to the root of your sleep difficulties and learn tools that you can use over the long term to improve your sleep quality and efficiency.
